What will I be doing in this course?
Preliminary Course
The Legal System (40% of course time)
• Basic legal concepts
• Sources of contemporary Australian law
• Classification of law
• Law reform and Law reform in action
The individual and the law (30% of course time)
• Your rights and responsibilities
• Resolving disputes
• The individual and technology
Law in practice (30% of course time)
• In depth research often integrated into other sections of the course
HSC Course
Crime – Nature of crime, criminal investigation process, criminal trial process, sentencing and punishment, young offenders, international crime (30% of course time)
Human Rights – nature and development of human rights, promoting and enforcing human rights, research into a contemporary issue (20% of course time)
Options – two chosen based on student interest – select from Consumers, Global environmental protection, Family, Indigenous peoples, Shelter, Workplace, World order (25% of course time each)
How will I be assessed?
Internally – A range of methods will be used including:
• Tests
• Research projects
• Class discussions and debates
• Involvement in presentations from guest speakers and possible court visits
Externally – The Higher School Certificate is a three hour examination which includes 20 multiple choice questions, structured short answer questions and extended response questions.
How will this course help me in the future?
This course will be of great value to students who wish to pursue careers in law, business, commerce, the media and social welfare in particular. In addition, all activities we engage in, and all relationships we develop throughout our lives, occur in a legal framework. All students will benefit from a greater understanding of laws.
What else do I need to know?
There are no pre-requisites for this course. That is, it is not is not necessary for students to have done law related courses, such as Show Me The Money, previously.
