What will I be doing in this course?

Preliminary Course

Investigating Ancient History (50% of course time)
• The Nature of Ancient History
• Case Studies
Features of Ancient Societies (35% of course time)
Historical Investigation (15% of course time)

Case studies could include:
• Old Kingdom Egypt
• Tutankhamun’s Tomb
• Deir el-Medina
• The Celts
• Boudicca
• Ashoka
• Nineveh
• Persepolis
• Teotihuacan

HSC Course

Core Study: Cities of Vesuvius – Pompeii and Herculaneum (25% of course time)

Ancient Societies – such as New Kingdom Egypt society during the Ramesside period (25% of course time)

Personalities in their Times – such as Akhenaten, a pharaoh of the 18th dynasty in Ancient Egypt (25% of course time)

Historical Periods – such as The Augustan Age 44 BC–AD 14 (25% of course time)

How will I be assessed?

Students will complete three tasks in the Preliminary course and four tasks in the HSC course, which will formally assess student achievement of course outcomes.  These tasks will be presented in the Preliminary/HSC Courses Assessment Booklet.

How will this course help me in the future?

The skills students learn in the study of Ancient History are fundamental to any area of further study which involves research, evaluation, critical and creative thinking and discipline.  These skills are particularly valuable for tertiary study at university.

What else do I need to know?

  • There is an opportunity to do a 1 Unit HSC Extension Course in Year 12.
