What will I be doing in this course?

Forms of Art Making in the Visual Arts course include:

Drawing – Painting – Printmaking – Photography – Digital Art – Graphic Design – Sculpture – Ceramics –Textiles and Fibers – Designed Objects & Environments – Film and Video – Animation – Installation

Visual Arts has two equal percentage components:

Art Criticism and History: Examining in depth case studies of important artists and art movements chosen from key periods of art history such as Modernism, Post Modernism, Renaissance, Asia and Australia. It also involves learning how to analyse artworks and how artist, artwork, world and audience all affect and influence one another.

Art Making: Year 11 involves students experimenting with a number of different materials and mediums and results in the creation of at least three minor artworks. Students will be required to keep a Visual Arts Process diary to record their ideas and progression of their Artworks. In Year 12, students will develop their own major Body of Work over the course of the year extending the practical aspect of art making that they are most adept at.

How will I be assessed?

Year 11/12 Theory Assessment: Students will be assessed on specific writing tasks, presentations and exams.

Year 11 Practical: Students will be assessed on their artworks and their VAPD diary.

Year 12 Practical: Students will be assessed throughout the year on the progression of their Body of Work with a final mark received around the trial exam.

How will this course help me in the future?

This course will prepare students who wish to apply for Visual Arts, Fine Art or Design courses at Art Schools and Universities, and will also help prepare students for those careers that require creativity, flair and imagination such as Fashion Illustration, Media/Communication, Architecture, Dramatic Arts or Scientific Illustration.

What else do I need to know?

• For basic use of equipment the course fee is $30.00. However, students will also need to purchase a Visual Arts Process Diary.
• Basic materials are supplied but if any specialist materials are required the student may need to cover the cost of this.
• A large component of your HSC course would be completing a major work (and associated portfolio); this is a demanding academic subject offering wonderful outcomes.
